In April, 1993. the Alberta Motor Association hosted a unique international multidisciplinary conference on novice driver issues. Bringing together a diverse group of experts in fields ranging from pure research to perception, traffic sociology, psychology, learning theory, education, advertising, design, media ecology and drama, It was a fascinating look at the novice driver from a variety of perspectives. Heinrich, head of traffic safety research at Germany's Federal Highway Research Institute (BAst), described two learning processes that are part of the novice drivers experience: one positive, the other negative.
